BAE, BIEN-U—SACRED WOOD

2009. There is a Korean saying that we all are born in a pine tree, live in a pine tree, and die in a pine tree. It’s no surprise that therefore the pine has become a symbol of longevity, strength, and patience. In his series “Sacred Wood” Korean photographer Bae, Bien-U captures the spirit of this in landscape pictures of breathtaking beauty.

For the accompanying book to several exhibitions in Brussels, Zurich and Berlin, commissioned by Gana Art Gallery Berlin, we created a sequencing for a meditative visual walk through the woods and works of Bae, Bien-U. To support this pure experience even further we designed a two-piece slipcase in bright white. The book cover itself shows only image, untouched by type.

“His extraordinary images are being ennobled through a book which, based on its detailed workmanship (high quality paper, two-piece slipcase, etc.), has already the potential to become a collector’s item. The saying “becoming one with nature” moves with this small complete artwork into a completely new dimension.”
