PRISMA—GENERATION 1

2000. We still remember the look of our English and Latin books from schooldays past—admittedly not always the sweetest memories, but memories indeed. They all were by Klett, one of Germany’s leading schoolbook publishers. This long lasting impressions in mind, we were fully aware of the graphic responsibility we had, when we were commissioned to design the covers of a book series for education for the first time. It was a great pleasure to stand in the hidden “treasure vaults” of the Klett archives looking at all the generations of schoolbooks since “the class of 48” while doing research. Our attempt on “Designing is not just for school, but for life” was going to begin.

The new series Prisma consisted of books for the three subjects biology, chemistry and physics. We developed a three color system for the covers and a basic layering concept to visualize the complex background of natural sciences by synaesthetic means. Linen and organic structures served for haptical impressions, and a combination of black and white photo plus emblematic drawing plus encyclopaedic text completed the multisensual assemblage. In the centre of it all: the PRISMA logo-like title of the series, reminding of chemistry’s periodic system.
